PC Rack Mount Computer

In order to have the PC take as much space as necessary but seamlessly sit on the Production Studio Bench, I decided to switch from my tower case to a rack mount case. This proved to be the best move, although some steps were imminent in order for the rack mount to be useful in the studio environment.

Advantages

Disadvantages

Most efficient space handling

Takes 3 slots (can be made to tale less if necessary)

Looks awesome on the rack!

No disadvantage here. It truly looks awesome!

Noise is not good... Not an advantage at all!

Rack mount cases are usually noisy like hell!

The only problem with a Rack Mount case is that these are usually meant for server applications. Hence expect the case to be noisy! The fans will most likely not be the best and the power supply (if included) will be the cheapest possible.

In my case, all I wanted was the shell. I installed my own fans and power supply from the Antec brand. Those are silent, indeed!

If you are looking for dual monitor setup, chances are you will need an extra adapter. I bet in a few months mother boards will come with dual output. This is not the case at the time of this writing. At first I wanted three monitors (How many pairs of eyes do I have???) Hence I bought a dual output video adapter. The mother board video output became the third monitor. At the moment I do not have a place to put the third monitor, so two is all I am using.

The last step was to change my mother board and CPU. I had a Pentium 4, 3GHz system. Although hyperthreading and all those cool gadgets were mighty fine back then, the Pentiums are famous as doors to the blazing hell. They are just too hot! Hence, cooling can only be achieved by either a huge fan or some form of water cooling. The fan alternative is by no means as silent as you want on the studio environment. And the water cooling is just too expensive!

At the end it proved to be way cheaper to re-buy the mother board and the CPU. This time I choose an AMD 64. This guy is so quiet I can have him singing back vocals and all you will be able to say is “nice solo!”

Here is my setup:
