This is a Short Form story I wrote as I took the “Fiction in a Flash” seminar, which took place on Saturday February 5, 2005 at Writers and Books, Rochester NY. The professor (my apologies for forgetting his name) had the newspaper article on the toast with Jesus Christ face that sold on eBay for a few thousand dollars. Then he asked us to come up with our own short story, titled “Two Eggs Over Jesus”. The following came during the next 30 minutes..
The frying pan had been posted on eBay just a few days ago, and the auction was close to an end. Arthur checked his computer every 10 seconds. “I’ll be damned if somebody gets this pan from me! This will cure Mama’s cancer if I can prepare her favorite: 2 eggs sunny side up with ham and hash browns.” By offering all of his savings, $300,000, he was already celebrating his triumph.
He checked again, the auction now less than a minute to be over. Terror grabbed him by his legs when he saw a higher bidder. “Holy crap! ChristianDude98 is bidding $325,000!!! Where on earth am I going to get that kind of money? I don’t care! I’ll do anything for Mama…”
Going into the bidding web page, he was able to enter a new bid for $400,000. The system requested his password. A timer close to the computer marked the time before the end of the auction. There were only 40 seconds left! Punching keys as fast as he could, he got the password in. But today the computer was slow…
A message popped up: “Your connection has been terminated.” He jumped on his chair. “What the hell? I have to reconnect?” Hands trembling, he got the reconnection undergoing, not certain he would be in time. The timer marked 20 seconds. And it took 15 of these precious to get the connection established…
Browsing as fast as he could, he got to the page again. Unaware of how much the auction was going for at the moment, he decided to punch in $500,000. “Just to make sure, Mama. The lord will heal you!”
The auction was over. Scared to death, he decided to go over the refresh button and check who the final highest bidder was. The name was ArthurGoggle. Was that he? YES!! He had been the winner and only for $437,000.
“Yes! Thank you lord! I won the frying pan with your son’s soul embedded in it! I have no idea where I am going to get the $137,000 dollars, but I am certain you will help me there. I better call Mama fast!”
Before he could get to the phone, it started ringing, the caller ID revealing it was his mother. “Hi Mamma, I have great news!”
“Oh Arthur. I have better! I just come from the doctor who told me the cancer is gone! Can you Believe it? It’s a miracle!!!”
