R2's, R2's and more R2's...
This is my R2D2 toy collection. If you are serious about building an R2 Unit, you better consider buying all of them. I also have a life size print, and two model kits one of which I used to canibalize and obtain true measurements. If you can count 21 units, you are doing good! (Well 20 actually since R5-D4 does not count...)
In a very near future (when my digital camera arrives) I will post some close ups of these lovable toys. The big one is actually a Telephone! I don’t use it as a phone, because all other R2's end up in the floor! But the best details can be found on the Wal-Mart version. There are actually three of this. The normal R2D2, the compartment and tool R2D2 (first on the down left) and the R5D4 (the red one). R5D4 has the same body as R2D2. If you are working on the legs and don't find any of the R2D2's you may buy R5D4 for leg and body reference. I made my measurements from the MPC Model Kit which is not shown as it was never assembled.
I do have the MPC MODEL KIT SCHEMATIC from which I took measures. Some measures are even wrote down on the pages. The last page on the PDF file explain how to transform the visible measures into the actual measures I used.
The measures I took from the model were used to create the Visio templates. This templates were printed and then glued on wood or resin blocks as well as wire frames to create the prototypes. You may found the VISIO TEMPLATES useful. I can't give too much information on how I used all of them because I really don't remember. They were used on a very early stage.
Some parts were built using Machine Shop technology which is more precise than printing a template and then cutting with a saw. This file provides exact measuring and differtnt views for some complex parts. Download the VISIO MACHINE SHOP SCHEMATICS so that you can machine this parts too. Measures are for a 19" inch head scaling.
